It all happened when my roommate Rachel went to a ladies luncheon. At the luncheon, they were drawing names out of a hat to give out prizes. There were gifts certificates to a hair solon, and fancy gift boxes.
One of the ladies names was drawn. This lady had helped put together the event. So, she knew what was in her box, and knew that she already had one. "I'll wait for the next gift, and someone else can have this one," she said.
Next, somebody pulled out an autumn orange wreath. When they did, there were exclamations of awe around the room as people the women admired it. But, my roommate didn't like it. It was such a loud shade of orange, and very, very big.
The name was drawn from the hat. It was Rachel's name. Rachel took the wreath, and tried to offer it to the woman who was waiting for the next gift.
"Oh no," the woman said, "I couldn't do that to you. You keep it, and I'll ask the woman who made them to make me another one."
Other women were teasing Rachel, "You need to leave soon, or I just might steal the wreath from you."
Disappointed that she couldn't give away the wreath without hurting someone's feelings, Rachel put it in the trunk of the car. She discussed with her friends about what to do with it.
"You could put it on your door," someone suggested. But, it was too big, and Rachel did not want anybody to think that she liked it. So, she hung it in the student lounge. She didn't want many people to know it was hers in case the guest house tries to return it to her in the winter
I was down there studying, and person after person walked by and noticed the wreath. One guy said, "Where did that come from?"
Rachel and I started laughing. She finally admitted, "I won it at the ladies luncheon."
"I'm sorry," he said.
Another guy commented, "It's so loud that we can't hear anyone talking."
Of all the people I heard voice their opinions about it, only one person said he "kind of" likes it.

Per reader insistence, I got a picture of the wreath. Admittedly, it looks much better in the picture than in real life. It is because my webcam is horrible at taking pictures. The actual color is a brighter orange.
